Just a brief post with a link to a short science fiction story I wrote in response to Mike Rugnetta’s recent PBS Idea Channel video, “Is Bob Dylan’s Work Really Literature?”
In it, he explored the idea that what we call “literature” is to a great extent contingent on what we value in a current time and place. As such, it’s possible (probable?) that there could come a day when we no longer consider Shakespeare to be “literary.”
Mike put out a call for dystopian sci-fi imagining a world in which Shakespeare is no longer literature.
I took up the call. Here’s the manuscript of my short story, “No Small Ado,” taking place (hopefully) a long time from now, somewhere in high orbit…: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rTH7c7gZAZtzrkOg7_MupEo1YTidFc91renuyTD55Zw/edit.
